Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)

error

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is one of the leading causes of vision loss in adults over age 50. At Atlantic Retina Consultants, our retina specialists provide advanced diagnostic testing, treatment, and monitoring to help preserve vision and maintain quality of life for patients with both dry and wet AMD.

Comprehensive Diagnosis, Treatment, and Monitoring for Macular Degeneration

What Is Macular Degeneration?

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) affects the macula, the portion of the retina responsible for sharp central vision. As AMD progresses, patients may experience blurred vision, difficulty reading, distortion of straight lines, and trouble recognizing faces.

AMD typically develops gradually but can significantly impact daily activities if left untreated.

Types of AMD

Dry AMD

Dry AMD is the most common form of macular degeneration and occurs when small deposits called drusen accumulate beneath the retina. Vision changes often develop slowly over time.

Wet AMD

Wet AMD occurs when abnormal blood vessels grow beneath the retina and leak fluid or blood. This form can cause rapid vision loss and requires prompt evaluation and treatment.

Common Symptoms

  • Blurred central vision
  • Distorted or wavy vision
  • Difficulty reading
  • Increased need for bright lighting
  • Reduced contrast sensitivity
  • Dark or missing areas in central vision

Risk Factors

Several factors can increase the likelihood of developing AMD, including:

  • Age over 50
  • Family history of AMD
  • Smoking
  • High blood pressure
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Poor nutrition

Diagnostic Testing

Our physicians utilize advanced retinal imaging technology to diagnose and monitor AMD, including:

  • Comprehensive retinal examination
  • Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)
  • Fundus photography
  • Fluorescein angiography when indicated

Treatment Options

Treatment recommendations depend on the type and severity of AMD.

Nutritional Support

Certain patients may benefit from specialized eye vitamins designed to support macular health.

Macular Risk Genetic Testing (MRGT)

Genetic testing may help identify risk factors associated with AMD and assist physicians in developing individualized monitoring strategies.

Valeda Light Delivery System

Eligible patients with dry AMD may benefit from the Valeda Light Delivery System, an FDA-authorized treatment utilizing photobiomodulation therapy to improve visual function.

Wet AMD Treatments

Patients with wet AMD often require intravitreal injections to reduce retinal swelling and help preserve vision.
